Let’s take a quick run-through of 21 fantastic things to do in and around GR this summer.

ADVENTURE

Laser Tag. Multiple mission options mean you can literally play for hours without duplicating a game. Team-based and family-friendly fun.

TreeRunner Grand Rapids Adventure Park. Adventure parks offer adrenaline-fueled excitement and challenges for all ages. Take the family and spend the day climbing, swinging, and pushing past your boundaries while 10, 20, and even 30 feet off the ground.

John Ball Zoo. More than 1,500 animals, including lions, tigers, and bears (you know the rest). The zoo also offers a funicular (look it up!), zip lines, high ropes, and much, much more.

Enjoy a Brews Cruise in Grand Rapids. Travel around GR, drink beer, and burn calories all at the same time while on the you-powered Great Lakes Pub Cruiser.

CULTURE

Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. Inspiring the joy of learning and self-directed exploration in children of all ages (but especially those who are actually kids).

Grand Rapids Public Museum. Where inspiration is endless and discovery is ongoing. The GRPM is heavily weighted towards a hands-on family-friendly approach to science, history, and culture.

Grand Rapids Art Museum. 6000+ works of art and over 3,000 works on paper. The GRAM offers hands-on workshops, talks with artists, guided tours, live concerts, and much more. Plus, admission is free on Meijer Free Tuesdays and Thursday Nights (5 pm – 9 pm).

Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. Featuring the original Watergate burglar tools and world-class exhibitions. The bodies of President Ford and First Lady Betty Ford are entombed at the museum.

Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA). “New forms of expression” are the Institute’s artistic bread and butter. It displays a wide range of artists’ work from the regional to the international as well as live events such as concerts, receptions, and gallery talks.

THEATER

Broadway Grand Rapids. The Great White Way visits GR with national tours of hit Broadway shows at the DeVos Performance Hall.

River City Improv. Comedic games, songs, and stories all made up on the spot based on a suggestion from the audience. No two shows are ever alike!

Actors’ Theatre Grand Rapids. “Innovative,” “Challenging,” and “Thought-provoking,” are just three ways audiences and critics have described Actors’ Theatre.

Civic Theatre. At a spry 94-years-old (Est. 1925), the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre holds the dual distinctions of being one of the oldest and largest community theatres in the country.

Opera Grand Rapids. Live opera is an experience one doesn’t easily forget, and likely one you’ll want to return to again and again. OGR features some of the top performers of the art.

Grand Rapids Ballet. World-class dancers performing works from the greatest choreographers of the last 100 years in multiple styles of dance from around the globe.

Van Andel Arena. Boasting over 12,000 seats, Van Andel Arena plays host to the hottest names and events in theater, music, and sports.

The Dinner Detective Grand Rapids. Another title-holder, The Dinner Detective is the nation’s largest interactive comedy murder mystery dinner show. Murder! Comedy! Entrees!

Circle Theatre. Five months (May-September). Three musicals. Two plays. And over 60 chances to see the best in live theater. (Last year over 20,000 Michiganders took advantage.)

DAY TRIPS

Lake Michigan is a quick car ride away, so why not take advantage of GR’s proximity and hit the shoreline?

Visit a Lighthouse. Michigan proudly claims to have the most lighthouses of any state. Go show some Great Lakes State pride and visit a couple.

Search for Petoskeys. Petoskey’s are Michigan’s official stone—fun fact: it’s actually a fossilized coral!—and completely legal to grab one of your own on the shores of Lake Michigan.
